Actually its not the fb-dimms, the mac pro has 4 memory slots on each of two memory riser boards which plugin perpendicular to the motherboard. The led's are on the riser boards and correspond to each memory slot apparently. Rebooting cleared them being red, so i dont know what the problem was.
